SYNOPSIS
Radio, music, and World War II were deeply interwoven into the fabric of America’s tapestry from 1941-45. The console radio was the sole source of immediate information while big band remotes turned living rooms into make-believe-ballrooms with streamlined imagery of skyscrapers and nightclubs.

Honoring America’s greatest generation, Five by Design recreates a poignant time capsule of American life during the war years. As “Sentimental Journey” opens the production, the audience is transported to a seemingly simpler time when an evening’s entertainment emanated from the amber glow of vacuum tubes in a wooden cabinet. Five by Design’s RADIO DAYS is an affectionate look at the children’s programming, soap operas, game shows, adventure serials, commercials, and the songs that were etched in the nation’s psyche.

Combining musical selections with celebrity appearances from big band leader Kay Kyser, Betty Grable, and the diva of the tutti-frutti hat, Carmen Miranda, Five by Design has meticulously crafted a musical retrospective from radio’s golden age. The show reaches its climax as a soldier and his bride embrace for a farewell dance to “I’ll Be Seeing You.” So climb aboard the “Chattanooga Choo-Choo” as Five by Design’s RADIO DAYS takes its audiences on a ride over the radio airwaves.
