Lorie is a founding member of Five By Design, and has been a member of the
group since 1984 when it was originally known as Hot Jazz. Lorie received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire with a major in Psychology and a minor in Music. It was during this time that she first heard the vocal group Manhattan Transfer and her love and study of vocal jazz began. She was a member of the UWEC vocal jazz ensemble which had the honor of representing the school on a tour of Russia and Romania.
Lorie was born in Colorado and her father's work relocated their family quite a bit during her early childhood, living in New York, Ohio, Delaware, and finally
Wisconsin. Her love of music was inspired by her musical mother, and she was very active in music and theatre during her grade school and high school years.
Ever the new kid, music was her way of fitting in. She was always drawn to
harmony and especially loved singing in barbershop quartets. While Lorie's most important roles in Five By Design are that of performing and creating, she is also instrumental in helping to coordinate and implement the numerous details that come with keeping a group on the road 200+ days a year, which include driving the truck.
Lorie is happily married to the group's tenor, Kurt. They have been married since 1990 and look forward to many more years of making beautiful music together.
